Science Research.....

Why Do Bees Buzz?

bee's wings makes it buzz. When an insect flies, the size of its wings and the speed of their flapping affect the sound they make. Small wings push against less air than big wings do, so they have to beat faster in flight.

Why Do Stars Twinkle?

The scientific name for the twinkling of stars is stellar scintillation (or astronomical scintillation). Stars twinkle when we see them from the Earth's surface because we are viewing them through thick layers of turbulent (moving) air in the Earth's atmosphere.

Why Do I Feel Dizzy When Spin?

Each hair is connected to a nerve cell that carries signals to the brain. When the head moves, the fluid sloshes around and bends the hairs. As each hair bends, it makes its nerve cell send a signal, telling the brain about that movement. When we spin around, the fluid starts spinning, too.

Why Does Hair Turn Grey

As we get older, the pigment cells in our hair follicles gradually die. When there are fewer pigment cells in a hair follicle, that strand of hair will no longer contain as much melanin and will become a more transparent color — like gray, silver, or white — as it grows.

What Causes Thunder?

Thunder is the sound caused by lightning. Depending on the distance and nature of the lightning, thunder can range from a sharp, loud crack to a long, low rumble (brontide). The sudden increase in pressure and temperature from lightning produces rapid expansion of the air surrounding and within a bolt of lightning.

Why Do We Have To Sleep

Researchers have also shown that after people sleep, they tend to retain information and perform better on memory tasks. Our bodies all require long periods of sleep in order to restore and rejuvenate, to grow muscle, repair tissue, and synthesize hormones.

Why Is The Sunset Red?

Within the visible range of light, red light waves are scattered the least by atmospheric gas molecules. So at sunrise and sunset, when the sunlight travels a long path through the atmosphere to reach our eyes, the blue light has been mostly removed, leaving mostly red and yellow light remaining.

Reflective Writing

Reflective Writing

My success this week is.......... competing in the school athletics! Coming first in discuss and long jump, Hillary girls. Being in the final for 100m and 200m and also being the hillary yr7 girls relay. My relay team did extremely well to come first in the yr7 girls relay.

My concerns this last week are......... Right now at this point in yr7 I have no concerns. because I feel like I am ready to become a yr8 and be a role model/leader for the new yr7 next year. Bur I am a little concerned for my 2 dance routines tonight in the school production but we have practised and practised so I hope it all goes well.

I am looking forward to........ finishing yr7 and becoming a leader of the school as yr8. I am looking forward to next year just being a yr8 and taking more opportunities. Having a fun-day at the end of yr7. Welcoming all the new yr7's next year; just we were welcomed into H.N.I this year.

Thank You Card

Thank You Card

In Class  We have been thanking all of the considerate and caring people who helped and supplied water for, Havelock north Intermediate.

My group wrote a letter to Ms Beaumont thanking her for supplying the hand sanitiser and casks of water for free; for the whole school. I mentioned how grateful the whole of Havelock North Intermediate is. Even Though our school was closed for 4 days, Ms Beaumont chose the right decision to shut down the school.

Thank you Ms Beaumont.

ANZAC Diary Writing

In writing this week we have been looking at diary writing while in the trenches during the ANZAC campaign of WW1.
Here is mine.....

Thursday 1st April 1916
To my dearest son, this is my 28th month gone without you. Since it is spring over here all the poppy flowers have come out, but all it does is remind me of you and all our happy times together! Outside by where the poppies grow one of my mates, Roger passed away. He was in the Maori Battalion with my; I mean i'm still grieving on him, but to be honest you hardly notice with all of this henis sights going on.

This time last week was the first I had ever gone out into no-man's-land! I didn't know what I was thinking son, but I just charged out with my gun and let it go into rapid fire- while I was screaming my head off. One of my men kept on saying “Fall back Tom! Fall back!” I didn't really listen till eventually I finally Fell backwards. Next think I knew I was in the first aid house. While I was out in no-man's-land someone shot me in the thigh. The nurse told me that Simpson's donkey gave me a ride bake in since I couldn't walk! Don’t worry now son I will be alright in a few weeks.

Today my leg is nearly all healed so I will be back out fighting soon. I am not to sure how my leg healed this fast because the state that the trenches are I would aseem my leg wound infected. The only food we eat here is stale biscuits - but i get first choice because my leg is injured!

Hopefully it is all good at home!
Love your dearest father, Tom xx

Today we designed a Room 2 Hillary House Banner for Kotahitanga week!
Here is my one. I hope you like it. It has a Silver fern to represent New Zealand and where we live. The HNI word to show who and where we are. I also drew a whale tail because that cooperates with our inquiry activity with our book. Mount everest to show why we are in Hillary House. Some kuro pattern showing our maori culture at our school!

My First Impression of HNI

My first impressions of HNI......... Having P.E gear as well as a school uniform, because it is much better than having to wear a dress when you are doing fitness. I also enjoy tech,  I am in food tech with Miss Basset. Bringing your own device is also very good and enjoyable. I enjoy Hillary house sport as well, Hillary assembly I also like. I can't wait to see what the rest of the year brings me!
