Here is mine.....
Thursday 1st April 1916
To my dearest son, this is my 28th month gone without you. Since it is spring over here all the poppy flowers have come out, but all it does is remind me of you and all our happy times together! Outside by where the poppies grow one of my mates, Roger passed away. He was in the Maori Battalion with my; I mean i'm still grieving on him, but to be honest you hardly notice with all of this henis sights going on.
This time last week was the first I had ever gone out into no-man's-land! I didn't know what I was thinking son, but I just charged out with my gun and let it go into rapid fire- while I was screaming my head off. One of my men kept on saying “Fall back Tom! Fall back!” I didn't really listen till eventually I finally Fell backwards. Next think I knew I was in the first aid house. While I was out in no-man's-land someone shot me in the thigh. The nurse told me that Simpson's donkey gave me a ride bake in since I couldn't walk! Don’t worry now son I will be alright in a few weeks.
Today my leg is nearly all healed so I will be back out fighting soon. I am not to sure how my leg healed this fast because the state that the trenches are I would aseem my leg wound infected. The only food we eat here is stale biscuits - but i get first choice because my leg is injured!
Hopefully it is all good at home!
Love your dearest father, Tom xx
